British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.
The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.
UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."
Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
