European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
