Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
