Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
