The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
