The UK and US have agreed to a important trade agreement that will keep zero import taxes on British pharmaceutical shipments being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to raise expenditure on medicines through the public health system. This move secures that duties on these key exports will remain at nothing for a period of 36 months.

This deal follows earlier threats to significantly raise import taxes on branded drug products, with potential rates floated up to one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the United Kingdom reinforces the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and establishes long-overdue fairness to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a release noted.

Economic Importance

Medicines constitute one of the UK's biggest goods shipped to the United States, which is clearly the primary market for leading UK drugmakers.

Statistics reveal that in the one-year period leading up to September, the UK sold medicines totaling £11.1bn to the US. This amount made up 17.4% of British export trade in that span.

"This guarantee safeguards employment, stimulates investment and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Detailed UK Commitments

The agreement entails several notable commitments from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the cost ceiling at which it deems new therapies to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to increase total public funding on drugs from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The sum pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at fifteen percent. Previously, repayments topped twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The deal follows a long-running row between the sector and the British authorities over medicine costs and approval rates.

The disagreement were intensified by claims that American customers were paying significantly more for the identical medicines than consumers in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS had to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a proportion of its total funding over the last ten years.
