World Health Organization Issues Alert Over Severe Shortage of Weight-Loss Injections

Less than 10% of patients that would benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy are able to get them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural guidance on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is advocating for increased and just access to this class of drugs.

Per forecasts, more than two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be treated with holistic and ongoing treatment," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to broad availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing significant weight, explains the organization.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Despite the current most favorable scenario, the supply of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The recommendation urges countries and companies to increase access, through measures such as voluntary licensing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the core ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

GLP-1 drugs mimick a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so people consume fewer calories.

Individuals usually begin shedding pounds after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Research points to users may regain a significant portion within a year of stopping the treatment, as their normal food cravings come back.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your chance for developing health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and specific cancers.

Obesity affects people in every country and was associated with millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
